Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins which are found around the rectum or in the anal canal. Hemorrhoids can be internal and external. When the veins are swollen inside the anus, they are internal hemorrhoids. When the veins are swollen under the skin surrounding the anus or towards the opening of the anus, they are external hemorrhoids. It may be painful but it normally not serious. The treatments and symptoms for hemorrhoids differ for each person depending on the type – internal or external.
A few simple ways on how to treat hemorrhoids are:
- Avoid harmful foods and beverages: Alcohol, red pepper, both regular and decaffeinated coffee, nuts, and mustard are harmful and therefore, should be avoided.
- Salt intake should be controlled: The intake of salt should be controlled because too much of it retains fluids present in the circulator system, causing bulging of the veins in the anal canal.
- More of fluids and fiber: When suffering from Hemorrhoids, one must eat food containing lots of fiber and drink lots of fluids, especially water.
- Warm water sitz baths: If the hemorrhoids are painful, then relaxing in sitz baths with warm water for a stipulated period of time is advisable.
- Usage of ice packs: Using or applying ice packs and cold compress a few times a day helps to reduce discomfort and swelling.
- Use of petroleum jelly or Zinc Oxide Paste: Use of a talc powder, a mild cream, petroleum jelly or Zinc Oxide Paste reduces itching and eases defecation.
- Cleanliness: The anal region should be regularly cleaned with wet paper or pre-moistened wipes for better healing.
- Loose clothing: Wear loose and comfortable clothing. Cotton underwear is advisable.
